1020 TPI Single Channel Particle Counter

1020 TPI Single Channel Particle Counter

Product Code: TPI1020
Discontinued

Description Prop65

TPI 1020 Single Channel Particle Counter - From filter testing to IAQ monitoring the 1020 single channel particle counter is used to determine airborne particle concentrations. The 3,000,000 particles per cubic foot concentration range and selectable particle size offers the versatility required for a wide range of applications.

Small Size. Big Performance. The handheld TPI 1020 is a portable particle counter that counts particles down to 0.3 microns-giving you portability and reliability at the lowest price in the industry

Completely Self-Contained-Selectable Particle Sizes. Don't let the size fool you-the TPI 1020 is completely self-contained with its own internal battery and sample pump, and is programmable, allowing you to choose your particle size of interest from five sizes: 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, or 5.0 microns

Fast Sampling. Unlike other counters that can take up to a minute to deliver results, the TPI 1020 starts delivering volumetric concentration results in about 3 seconds! This facilitates quick multi-site sampling, tracing particle sources and site particle trending.

Simple Operation. Only two front-panel buttons control the size channels and sample cycle. Power is controlled by the Start / Stop button.

Battery or AC Powered. The self-contained battery pack powers the unit for 30 hours of typical intermittent operation, and for up to 12 hours of continuous use. The included AC charger / adapter operates the counter, even when the battery pack is discharged, and recharges the depleted battery in 2.5 hours.

The TPI 1020 is designed to be a small, easy to use and completely portable hand-held particle counter that can provide fast and accurate measurement of particulate contamination in particles per cubic foot (or liter). The TPI 1020 has 5 selectable size ranges of 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 micron.

The TPI 1020 contains a laser diode based sensor, Lithium Ion battery pack, vacuum pump, microprocessor electronics, LCD display and user input keys all in one small package. The accuracy of the TPI 1020 is certified according to ASTM and JIS standards and comparable to larger more expensive bench top particle counters. The fast 3-second response of the TPI 1020 makes it especially useful for troubleshooting contamination problems and tracing contamination leaks to the source.

The laser diode based sensor inside the TPI 1020 utilizes a specially designed elliptical mirror for high light collection efficiency and improved signal to noise. Precision optics collimate the laser beam into a thin, very intense beam resulting in increased signal and a high concentration limit of 3,000,000 particles per cubic foot. This high concentration limit allows the TPI 1020 to be used for indoor and outdoor aerosol particulate measurement.

OPC vs. Nephelometer
For practical applications, two kinds of instruments exist. The first type of instrument detects single particles through light scattering and is known as an optical particle counter (OPC). The second type of instrument detects scattering from an assembly of particles and is known as a nephelometer or photometer.

An OPC is capable of counting and sizing individual particles. A Nephelometer provides an integrated output closely related to particle mass concentration. The application of an OPC or Nephelometer depends on the measured environment and any regulatory requirements.

OPCs are required for measurements in cleanrooms or where the required measurements are particles per litre. Nephelometers are required when the measurement is for mass concentration or micrograms per cubic meter.

EPA guidelines on dust:

Description: Dust is made up of particles in the air that settle on surfaces. Large particles settle quickly and can be eliminated or greatly reduced by the body's natural defense mechanisms. Small particles are more likely to be airborne and are capable of passing through the body's defenses and entering the lungs.

Sources: Many sources can produce dust including: soil, fleecy surfaces, pollen, lead-based paint, and burning of wood, oil or coal.

Standards and Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality: The EPA Ambient Air Quality standard for particles less than 10 microns is 50 µg/m 3 for an annual average and 150 µg/m 3 for a 24-hour average.

Health Effects: Health effects vary depending upon the characteristics of the dust and any associated toxic materials. Dust particles may contain lead, pesticide residues, radon, or other toxic materials. Other particles may be irritants or carcinogens (e.g. asbestos).

Control Measures: Keep dust to a minimum with good housekeeping. Consider damp dusting and high efficiency vacuum cleaners. Upgrade filters in ventilation systems to medium efficiency when possible and change frequently. Exhaust combustion appliances to the outside and clean and maintain flues and chimneys. When construction or remodeling is underway, special precautions should be used to separate work areas from occupied areas.
